Supported Independent Living, or SIL, is funding for the day to day support you need to live in your own home. It pays for the help, not the house.
SIL covers the support you need with everyday tasks at home: things like cooking, cleaning, personal care, medication prompts, and building the skills to do more of it yourself over time.
It is designed for people who need a fair bit of support, often around the clock or close to it. The funding follows you and your needs, not a building, so it is about the people who help you, not the bricks and mortar.
SIL does not pay your rent or cover the cost of the house itself. That side is usually handled through your own income, Commonwealth Rent Assistance, or in some cases Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding, which is separate.
It is worth knowing the difference, because people often expect SIL to cover housing costs and it simply does not. SIL is the support inside the home.
SIL tends to suit people with higher or more complex support needs, who benefit from having support workers available consistently, sometimes 24 hours a day.
If your needs are lighter, or you only need help a few hours here and there, other supports like regular support workers may fit better and cost less. A good provider will tell you honestly which one suits you.
It will be listed in your NDIS plan under Core Supports, usually described as assistance with daily life in a shared or individual living arrangement. If you are not sure, we can help you read your plan.
Yes. In shared SIL homes, provider and participant matching matters a lot, and you should have a say in who you share with. We take that seriously.
Not at all. SIL can be delivered in a home you already have, or in one of our homes if that suits you better. It is about the support, wherever you are.
No jargon, no pressure. We will talk it through in plain words and point you the right way, even if that is not us.
