What is a psychosocial recovery coach?

A psychosocial recovery coach supports people living with mental health challenges to build confidence, work towards their goals, and get the most from their NDIS plan.

What a recovery coach does

A recovery coach works alongside you to understand your goals, build your skills and confidence, and help you navigate both the NDIS and the wider mental health system.

The focus is recovery in the real sense: not a cure, but a life that feels more like yours, with more independence and more of what matters to you in it.

How it differs from a support coordinator

A recovery coach and a support coordinator do overlapping work, but a recovery coach is specifically trained in mental health and psychosocial disability, often with lived experience of their own.

They tend to spend more time building a relationship with you and supporting recovery directly, where a support coordinator is more focused on connecting services and managing the plan.

How it is funded

Psychosocial recovery coaching is funded under Capacity Building in your NDIS plan. It is a defined support item, so it needs to be included in your plan specifically.

If it is not there yet and you think it would help, it is worth raising at your next plan review.

Common questions

Do I need a diagnosis to get a recovery coach?

You need psychosocial disability recognised in your NDIS plan. You do not need to have everything figured out before you reach out, that is part of what the coach helps with.

Is a recovery coach the same as a therapist?

No. A recovery coach is not a clinician and does not replace counselling or psychology. They work alongside those supports, focused on practical recovery and building your confidence.

Can I have both a recovery coach and counselling?

Yes, and many people do. They do different things and work well together.
