Everyone needs a break, including the people doing the caring. Short term respite gives you somewhere safe, comfortable and genuinely enjoyable to stay, and gives family and carers a proper rest without worrying.
Short Term Accommodation, or STA, is NDIS funding for a stay away from home, usually up to 14 days at a time. It covers the accommodation, the support, the meals and the activities while you are there.
People use it for different reasons. Sometimes family or carers need a genuine break. Sometimes it is about trying independence in a safe setting. Sometimes something has changed at home and you need somewhere for a bit. All of those are fine.
A real house in a real street, not a facility. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, close to transport and shops, near the Mornington Peninsula.
Three bedrooms and two bathrooms, set up so a stay feels like staying somewhere, not being placed somewhere.
Staff in the house around the clock, not on call from somewhere else.
We think about who is staying and when. Getting the mix wrong makes everyone miserable.
Short Term Accommodation is generally funded up to 14 days at a time, and up to 28 days a year in total. If you need something longer, medium term respite may be the better fit and we offer that too.
They usually mean the same thing. STA is the NDIS funding term, respite is what most people actually call it. Both refer to a short stay away from home with support included.
Of course. It is a home, not a facility. We will work out visiting around whatever suits you and whoever else is staying.
We support complex and high-intensity needs, including positive behaviour support, medication administration and personal care. Tell us what is involved and we will be straight with you about whether we can meet it.
As early as you can, especially for school holidays which fill up fast. That said, if something has come up suddenly, call us. We will tell you honestly what is available.
Our short term accommodation is based in Frankston, a quiet cul-de-sac near the Mornington Peninsula. Families across the south-east use it for planned breaks and genuine emergencies alike.
A few of the people we've supported, in their own words.
Greater consistency, greater calm.
