Free Public Transport in Victoria This April: Supporting Independence Through NDIS with YAY Today!

Free Public Transport Across Victoria This April

In response to rising fuel costs and cost-of-living pressures, the Victorian Government has announced free public transport across the state for the entire month of April.

So from 31 March through to the end of April, all trains, trams, and buses, including metro and regional services, will be free for passengers.

This initiative aims to reduce financial stress and encourage more people to use public transport as an accessible, practical travel option.

Why This Matters for NDIS Participants?

For people living with disabilities, access to reliable and affordable transport is essential for independence and community participation.

Free public transport creates an opportunity for individuals to:

    • Explore their community more freely

    • Attend appointments, social activities, and programmes.

    • Reduce financial barriers to participation

This aligns strongly with NDIS goals around the following:

    • Increased independence

    • Improved social and community participation

    • Building confidence in daily life skills

Supporting Independence and Community Access

At YAY Today, we recognise that community access is a key part of building a fulfilling and independent life.

Public transport plays a vital role in the following:

    • Connecting individuals to employment, education, and social opportunities

    • Encouraging independence from family or carers

    • Building confidence in navigating real-world environments

With fares removed for April, this is a great time for participants to practise independent travel in a low-pressure, cost-free way.

Building Public Transport Skills with YAY Today

Our team provides tailored NDIS support to help participants build essential life skills, including safe and confident use of public transport.

We support clients with:

    • Planning trips (routes, timetables, and destinations)

    • Understanding transport systems (trains, trams, buses)

    • Travel safety skills (awareness, communication, problem-solving)

    • Building confidence through supported practice

    • Developing independent living skills

This hands-on approach ensures participants gain real-world experience while feeling supported every step of the way.

Linking Public Transport to NDIS Goals

Using public transport is more than just getting from A to B, it’s a powerful way to work towards meaningful NDIS goals.

Skill development in this area can help participants:

    • Increase independence in daily living

    • Access their community without reliance on others

    • Build social connections and confidence

    • Improve decision-making and problem-solving skills

By practising these skills during April’s free transport period, participants can make significant progress towards their personal goals.
